Laurie rested her hand on the small of Cookie’s back. On the other side of the window in front of them sat Lucy. She was in the same position Philip had been only days before. Cookie watched her old best friend with tears welling in her eyes. Her heart was torn in half by the treason Lucy had committed and now the sight before her. Laurie looked at her little sister, worry showing on her face. Cookie had asked to come and see Lucy. Laurie tried to change her mind but Cookie insisted.
Laurie turned back to the sight before them and studied Lucy carefully. Lucy’s contacts were gone; now her eyes showed the effects of brainwashing. They blazed bright red and had showed no change over the past week. Laurie prayed that Lucy’s eyes would change to orange soon for Cookie’s sake. Once they had, it was only a matter of time before the eyes turned yellow and back to their natural color. Only then would Lucy be back to the way she was before being brainwashed.
“I am ready to go now,” Cookie said quietly. She turned away from the window and walked over to the nurse’s desk. Lora Ross had been watching the sisters and was waiting for them.
“What is it Cookie?” Lora asked gently, grasping Cookie’s hands in hers.
“How much longer does she have?” Cookie asked. She pulled her hands away from Lora.
“A week,” Lora replied sadly. “Then we will have to let her go above.”
Cookie nodded and turned from the desk. “Ok.” She proceeded down the hall towards the tunnels. Laurie and Lora exchanged a worried glance before Laurie chased after her sister.
Lora glanced at the clock and saw that it was time to take Lucy off her treatment. She walked over and opened the door. Lora released Lucy from the chair and walked her to the rest room. Lucy sat on the couch and fell asleep almost instantly.
“I’m sorry Catalina,” Lucy said in her sleep. Lora glanced at her with surprise. She pulled up Lucy’s eyelid and was amazed by the sight. Her eyes were brown instead of the blazing red they had been for the past week.
“I had no choice. I couldn’t stop once I started. Forgive me Catalina,” Lucy continued. She opened her eyes and looked at Lora. “I want to go to my room.”
“Ok,” Lora mumbled and helped Lucy stand. Lucy’s eyes had gone back to red when she awoke.
“Hello,” Laurie said. Her radio had gone off just as she and Cookie had entered their room.
“Laurie, this is Lora. The most amazing thing just happened,” Lora said excitedly. “Is Cookie with you?”
“Yeah, she’s with me,” Laurie replied. She waved Cookie over. “What is this all about?”
“I took Lucy to the rest room after her treatment and she fell asleep, right,” Lora started. “Well, as she was sleeping she asked Catalina to forgive her and that she had no choice, that once she started she couldn’t stop.”
Cookie grabbed the radio from Laurie. “Did she really say that?” she asked.
“Yes Cookie, she did. And when she started talking I looked at her eyes and they were brown not red. Unfortunately though when she awoke her eyes went back to red.”
“What does that mean?” Laurie snatched the radio back from Cookie.
“It means there is hope, that’s what it means,” Lora replied. Cookie and Laurie smiled at each other.
“I just wanted to let you know,” Lora said.
“Thanks so much Lora,” Laurie replied. She signed off and grabbed Cookie in a hug.
